ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE

Prisoner Has Term Increased

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 12.

Leo Tamarau, aged 24, a workman, had his three-year prison term increased by six months when he appeared tor sentence before Mr W. J. Meade, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland this afternoon on a charge of attempting to escape from Auckland Prison on September 30.

The Magistrate said Tamarau had been found in the vicinity of the south wing of the prison at 9 a.m. bleeding profusely from a wound on his forehead.

Tamarau told a prison doctor he had banged his head on a cell door. Later he said he had slipped on the stairs and banged his head on the banister. The Magistrate said Tamarau had obviously intended to escape and had injured his head when wrenching off a lock.
