IMPORTING VEHICLES
Customs Work Unprofitable
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 12.
The importing of motorvehicles would occupy the equivalent time of eight men on full-time wbrk in the Customs Department, said Mr H. Goodman. Auckland subcollector of customs, addressing the annual assembly of the New Zealand Automobile International Touring Alliance today. He said a large part of the time would be quite unprofitable.
During, the last three months the office had issued over 100 non-remittance licences a month to New Zealand residents. So far this year over 1800 cars had arrived under various licences.
He said he strongly advised anyone considering importing a car to get in touch with the local collector of customs because the regulations changed more than was realised.
In welcoming the delegates. Mr J. M. Ewen, president of the Automobile Association (Auckland), said the alliance served a useful purpose and had the support of all the associations. The alliance last year issued 6744 international driving permits, compared with 5060 in the previous year. New Zealand touring signs were issued to 574 motorists.
