NEW ASCENT RECORD FROM SUBMARINE.—A sailor floating on the water in his inflated rubber suit after escaping from the British submarine Tiptoe, 260ft down on the bed of the Mediterranean. He is one of eight men who volunteered to test new techniques in free-ascent escaping from submarines at depth. No member of a British submarine crew has survived an emergency aseent exceeding 150ft Scientists believe that escapes from depths of more than 400ft may now be possible.
