New Zealand Lying 3rd In Eisenhower Cup (NX. Press Assn.—Copyright) KAWANA (Tokyo), October 10. The young Auckland player, W. J. Godfrey, made a magnificent contribution to New Zealand filling third place, behind the United States and Canada, after the first day s play in the world’s amateur golf championship for the Eisenhower Cup at Kawana, Tokyo, today. Godfrey, with spectacular halves of 36 and 33, had a one-under-scratch score of 69. It was beaten only by the Canadian golfer, G. Gowan, whose 68 equalled the course record.

The other New Zealand scores were: R. R. Newdick (Auckland) 74, R. C. Murray (Canterbury) 75 and S. G. Jones (Hawke’s Bay) 77.

With the three best scores from the teams of four counting towards the championship, New Zealand totalled 218.

The United States, whose top player, R. H. Sykes, also returned a 69, led by three

strokes with an aggregate of 212. Canada was lying second with 215. Britain (222) and South Africa (223) were fourth and fifth respectively. Both Murray and Jones finally disappointed after fine outward halves, Murray with 34 and Jones 35. The Canterbury player had difficulty reaching the greens on the second half, although

a putt of 30ft stopped on the lip of the eighteenth hole, and returned in 41.

Jones, who had a 69 in his final practice round yesterday, was one stroke more than Murray for the second nine holes. Newdick was steady with two halves of 37. Both Japan and Australia finished down the list, the former nine strokes behind New Zealand in ninth place, and Australia 12 behind in eleventh position. Leading positions after the first day (best three scores in each team count towards championship) were:— 212.—United States: R. H. Sykes. 33, 36—69; D. R. Beman, 35. 35—70; L. Harris, 36, 37—73: W.
