Town Hall Plans
Sir,—Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this “man from Perth.’’ I am especially bucked, as the closing of part of Victoria street and Oxford terrace and building the town hall on Market square was advocated by me in a letter to the chairman of the town hall committee over a year ago and also in one to you. We hope there will be no more opposition and the building proceeded with as soon as plans are prepared- Closing Victoria street through the square will divert much traffic from Cathedral square and the bank bottleneck. Market square was set aside by pioneers as a town hall site 100 years ago and is still the best. Professor Stephenson’s report has been eagerly awaited and has brought complete satisfaction to the citizens of Christchurch. —Yours, etc., CHAS. E. ALLEN. October 10, 1962.
