Savings
Sir,—“Cosmonian,” in his anxiety to make a political point, is not displaying his customary perspicacity. There is ample evidence that the withdrawals of savings over the last year or two lias been due to economic stringency which has been felt in every walk of life throughout the country. The sales pressure exerted by retail businesses; the extensions of credit by them and the easing off of hire-purchase terms all point to the same thing. Personally I have reversed the usual process by selling shares and increasing my Savings Bank account as a measure of prudence in the present uncertainty of the economic climaite. I fancy if “Cosmonian” were to ask the man in the street his views upon the modern Yellow Peril he would assume that his interlocutor was talking about infective hepatitis.—Yaurs, etc, PROTEUS.
