Roses In Colour

Roses. By 11. Edland. Batsford. 70 pp. The queen of flowers, the rose, stimulates a never-end-ing flow of literature for her devotees This latest addition, by the secretary of the National Rose Society, provides 24 beautiful colour illustrations to tempt the enthusiast, in a selection representative of the main types of rose in cultivation. Any collection of illustrations from a horticultural group so large as the rose must necessarily be somewhat disjointed. Mr Ediand’s brief text, discussing the historical background of rose development to present-day perfection, does help to give coherence and purpose to the book, but the latter's main substance is undoubtedly the illustrations, which do their job of stimulating interest very well.
