New Grass Problem

Clover establishment—with existing white' clover—could become a real difficulty when tong rotation ryegrass replaced perennial ryegrass, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, officer in Charge of the Lincoln substation of the Grasslands Division, said at a field day held this week by Halswell Federated Farmers.

With autumn sowing, he said, the problem would be to keep clover in the sward in the following spring and summer because the grass grew so well into the spring and summer. The sward would demand heavy stocking and while the problem might not be so acute on sheep farms, he said, it could be serious on dairy farms, and the answer might be to cut back the sowing rates to 5 to 101 b.

A redeeming feature was. however, that at least soon after the release of the new variety of grass there would follow' a new improved white clover which was much more winter active.
