Poland Cup To Action Packed
“The Press" Special Service PAEROA, September 26. Action Packed followed a succession of disappointing races with a decisive victory in the £lOOO Poland Cup at Paeroa today. • Until about three furlongs from the finish he kept a fair way behind, but he ran the last bit so solidly that he came to the post with a good two lengths on the closest of his opponents.
Since he finished second to Kumai in the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham last July, Action Packed had been right out of form. The Poland Cup was his sixth start in tshe meantime. In none of the others did he look likely to win although two starts back he managed a fifth in the Coronation Handicap at Avondale. Action Packed is a seven-year-old gelding being raced in partnership by his trainer, G. G. Cameron, of Takanini, and Mr S. E. Christmas. Bach winter, for several seasons he has paid his way very handsomely, but it is unusual for him to carry his winning form so far into the spring as he has done this year. Through his failure to show form lately, Action Packed came to a pretty favourable handicap again and in the Poland Cup he carried 8-6. That was the top weight, but 81b less than he had in the Parliamentary Handicap for which the scale was up for the winter. For the Poland Cup, Action Packed was the next favoured after Royal Filou and Foxskin on the win machine and the fourth frvourite for a place. His win and place returns were £9 Is 6d and £2 16s 6d. As expected by nearly everyone, the Takanini three-year-old Pipe Dream was too good altogether tor his opponents in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Flying Handicap. Pipe Dream Improving Pipe Dream was having his second race after a winter spell when he ran today The other time, he finished sixth over six furlongs at Avondale. If he continues to improve, and this seems likely, it will take a very fast colt or filly to beat him in the Great Northern Guineas. Pipe Dream was a hot favourite, carrying £5127 10s out of the £13.443 10s bet win and place on the Flying Handicap. He was also a popular fancy with doubles bettors to whom he returned a dividend with Action Packed of £l9 13s tor £l. On the win and place, the returns on Pipe Dream were £1 Ils 6d and £1 Is. Action Packed was ridden very coolly by L. G. Coles and G. F. Hughes, full of confidence, was on Pipe Dream. The weather was fine and brilliantly sunny. The ground was very soft and cutting out at first but drier towards the finish. The totalisator, on-course, handled £64,583 10s. including £11,517 on doubles, compared with £50.510 10s last year when the fixture was on a Saturday. Cup Running Fa; rend a dwelt slightly at the start of the Poland Cup. Mesopotamia and Starboard began quickest and just led Dipnoi and Perseus with a mile to run Royal Filou was dose on the inside. Romance came next, then Foxskin. Truella, Firenze. Fairende and Goldmyth. With seven furlongs to go Starboard and Mesopotamia were out by a couple of lengths from Royal Filou (inside) and Dipnoi. Two lengths further back were Romance and Perseus and there was a further short gap to Foxskin. Truella, Firenze and Advocacy. Near the half-mile Dipnoi, Royal Filou and Romance improved fast to be just about with Starboard and Mesopotamia. Foxskin was right there also. A little further on Action Packed started to make ground from the back and Advocacy also improved. Just outside the last furlong, Action acked made a run to the front, well out towards the centre, and he went away strongly to score by two lengths. Royal Filou shaded Advocacy tor second. Mesopotamia was a close fourth, followed by Firenze, Dipnoi, Truella. Sinecure, Perseus, Starboard and Red Luca. Pipe Dream was second or
third out from the start of the Flying Handicap but within 50 yards he led and, after a furlong, he was clear by a length or so from Sand Boy, Termed. So Wealthy. Speed well (wide), Hello Polly, Wimmera King and Yara. Continuing to go very freely, Pipe Dream easily kept in front across the top. His lead was a length from Sand Boy which had nearly a length on Termed. Speedwell came next, just ahead of So Wealthy, Wimmera King and Yara. With his rider keeping still Pipe Dream held his opponents off without much difficulty until the finish where he was two lengths and a half clear of Red Forest which beat Yara by half a length for second. So Wealthy was fourth. He was followed by Sand Boy. There was a further length to Speedwell and Wimmera King and another to Poet’s Pride, Hello Polly and Tormod.
