REGISTRARS OF UNIVERSITIES
N.Z. Conference In Christchurch
Registrars of all universities in New Zealand, who will assemble in Ohristehurch today for their annual conference, have a particularly important agenda, as this is the first meeting since the former colleges became autonomous universities.
A host of domestic problems has arisen in the change, each university has been making its own new regulations for many months, and new patterns of both uniformity and individuality are emerging in administrative practices. The universities have agreed that it is desirable that there should be uniformity in routine so that, for instance, records can be easily transferred in the event of students moving. But the universities have each inaugurated individual procedures which are of mutual interest. This conference is therefore expected to be particularly important. The exchange of information will be much more significant than when all constituent colleges operated under a -ystem set by the University of New Zealand.
The relationship of the universities with the University Grants Committee in administrative matters is also likely to be a major topic. When the conference ends tomorrow, the Canterbury Registrar (Mr G. G. Turbott) will show his colleagues the extent to which office routine has been mechanised at the university and also the many building developments now in progress.
