RAIL STRIKE ENDS
3 Australian States (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter— Copyright) MELBOURNE. Sept. 26. More than 1,000,000 commuters in three States were able to resume their routine of going to work by rail today after a 24-hour train stoppage. Trains began moving in Victoria. New South Wales and South Australia shortly after midnight. Many of the 8000 railwaymen involved attended meetings called by the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen yesterday, as commuters struggled to work in overloaded buses and trams, or on packed highways in motor vehicles. The union officials today will serve a list of demands on the Railway Commissioners in the three States including payment of overtime rates after an eight-hour shift, double time on Sundays and substantial increases in margin rates. The Australian Stevedoring Industry Authority in Melbourne penalised watersiders four days’ appearance money —£22,ooo —for not working during the stoppage period.
