LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
Campaign To Open Tonight
The first official speeches in the local body election campaign will be made this evening when the Citizens’ Association will open its campaign for the election on October 13.
The Labour Party' will open in Sydenham next Wednesday, Some candidates have already begun thqir own personal campaigns with streetcorner meetings and the distribution of pamphlets. Only four speeches will be made this evening at the Citizens’ meeting in the Jellicoe Hall. Cr. H. P. Smith, the Deputy-Mayor and leader of the Citizens’ team, said yesterday that two hours of speeches were too much for any audience. Documentary films would be interspersed with the speeches. Cr. Smith will be the main speaker outlining what has been accomplished in the three years the Citizens’ Association has held the council, first with all 19 seats and more recently with 18 and 17. Two members died during the term—one was replaced by the Labour candidate who topped the pol] of unsuccessful candidates and the other seat was left vacant. Candidates on the Citizens' ticket for the council, the North Canterbury Hospital Board, Lyttelton Harbour Board and North Canterbury Catchment Board will be introduced to the audience and the policy for the boards will be outlined.
The Labour Party's policy will be announced at the meeting next Wednesday. The party plans meetings in halls, on street corners and in factories during lunch hours.
