DISMISSALS AT UNIVERSITY

Committee May Hear Cases

The professorial board of toe University of Canterbury has "received with gratification” advice that it will have representation on a standing committee to hear evidence in cases of dismissal. A new regulation (one of many prepared this year to cover almost any eventuality under the university’s new independent status) provides that any staff member may be “removed for good cause.” The r.ew standing committee. consisting of the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and two members each of the council and of the board, may hear both sides before the council makes its decision, but its role will be purely advisory.
