Tennis NO TROPHY CHALLENGES

Canterbury’s Decision

Canterbury will not be among the challengers for either the Wilding Shield or the Nunnelley Casket during the 1962-63 tennis season.

The management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association decided this last evening.

“We have got Miss Davidson. haven’t we?” asked Mr E. Biddle before the decision was made. “That means we are not going to give out New Zealand champion a game.” A challenge was a team effort and supporting players were needed, said Mr R. N. C. Hill. In any case, a challenge would be too expensive in the circumstances.

• A Canterbury team which included L. A. Gerrard challenged for the shield last season but was well beaten by Auckland. The committee decided to. emter for both the Slazenger and Howe Shields, for junior boys’ and girls’ teams. The chairman of the competitions committee (Mr R. P. Murphy) said the senior men's competition in the coming season would be of two rounds, with the eight teams divided into two sections after the first round. Mr Healey had offered to give a trophy for competition among the lower four teams, he added.

Suggestions are to be made to the Wellington associa'ion that the Canterbury v. Hutt Valley match be played at Christchurch on February 9 and the Canterbury v. Wellington match be played at Wellington on March 9.

A sub-committee consisting of Messrs G. E. R. Atkinson. A. M. Hatch and M. C. Healey was appointed to meet officials of the South Christchurch club to discuss the acceptance by South Christchurch of two unaffiliated clubs for its night tennis competition. The rules of the association do not permit an affiliated club to play unafflliated clubs on its courts The subcommittee was instructed by the management committee to seek the withdrawal of the entries from the unaffiliated clubs.
