TEACHING CIVICS
Advice Of Sir John Allum
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. The teaching of civics in schools to make young people aware of their responsibilities in a democracy was advocated by Sir John Allum, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Bridge authority . Sir John AUum was addressing the thirty-fourth annual conference of the Secretaries’ Association of the Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association of New Zealand. “It should be brought home to students what it has cost and what sacrifices have been made to win the democratic way of life,” he said. “They should know their future responsibilities, not only as possible future members of Governments and local authorities but also as voters. “They should be taught that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” he said.
