The Somme
Sir,—l observe a letter asking that we remember the Somme. Why should we remember a battle in which thousands of men died, others were left maimed for life, and hundreds lost sons and husbands? Such a hideous blot on the pages of history is surely best forgotten. As for Gallipoli, the less said about the colossal blunder the better. Your correspondent must not expect others, too young to have even known a war in many cases, to share his memories Yours, etc., A. J. SIMPSON. September 19. 1962.
