500GNS. FOR A GOLDIE

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 19. An Auckland business man today paid 500 guineas at an auction for a portrait of a tattooed Maori chief, Patara Te Tuhi. by the famous Auckland artist, C F. Goldie. The price is believed to be the highest fetched by the auctioneering firm for any of this artist’s work. Another painting which commanded a high price was a water colour by 'John Gully of the Slaty River Peak, Collingwood. Nelson. This went for £467 10s. G. Lindauer's portrait of a tattooed Maori chieftainess, dated 1876. brought £157 10s and Gully’s water colour of the Richardson mountains, dated 1878, fetched £ll5 10s. Goldie’s portrait of Tamehana in profile, dated 1900, was withdrawn from the sale when bidding stopped at £175.
Hawke's Bay Bank.— The establishment of a new trustee savings bank in Hawke’s Bay has been authorised by an Order-in-Council, the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) announced yesterday.—(P.A.)
