Sept. 18 Jim Hawthorne, a husky 6ft 2 n Canadian tenor from the New York City Opera Company, flew into Whenuapai today from New York accompanied by an American comedian. Fred Harper. Mr Hawthorne will pjay Karl Franz in the Theatre .Art’s production of “The Student Prince” and Mr Harper is the valet. Lutz. Mies Mary O’Brien, who will sing the lead of Kath-ie, was at the airport to meet the “prince.” Mr Hawthorne, who is 34. has just finished playing ’’Lilac Time” and “New Moen” in the Kansas City Starlight Theatre. "Television has given opera a wonderful boost in America." he saiid. "One network runs a regular Sunday series of operas and has almixst gone through the complete repertoire." Mr Harper, who specialises in comedy' and character riles, said television was great to work in. but tough to watch at times. "A lot of people have got tired of or used to television and are going back to the theatre of entertainment.” he said. "They used to stay glued to their sets, but if you do. the ixmmerc.als w.U drive you nuts.”
