Need For New Prison

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. La Mattina’s escape illustrated the need for a modern, maximum security institution in Auckland, said the Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) tonight. He had been asked to comment on the latest escape and recapture of the murderer. Angelo La Mattina. La Mattina’s previous escape was a factor in speeding up the purchase of land at Paremoremo for such an institution, said Mr Hanan. A report on the escape would be made in the usual way by the inspector of prisons (Mr I. J D McKay), he said. Mr Hanan was unable to say when the building of the new gaol would be begun.
