THIS HEAVY EARTHMOVING TRUCK slipped when a section of the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s reclamation works at Lyttelton suddenly subsided yesterday. A spit of earth and rock filling about 20 yards wide and 50 yards long suddenly sank, part of it disappearing beneath the water. The original height of the earth, about 30ft, can be seen above the truck’s front wheels. A bulldozer was also working on the spit when it subsided, but managed to reach solid ground. It took three bulldozers more than half an hour to extricate the truck. The driver was not injured.
