Old Hut Restored

An old. semi-derelict cocksfoot cutters' hut at the head of Kaituna valley is now “on its feet again,’* having been restored by members of the Canterbury regional committee of the National Historic Places Trust during the week-end. The hut. built in the early 1880's, is built entirely from totara timber, and has been preserved as an example of its type of construction. A working party of seven commiftee members carried winches, steel cable, and tools to the site on Saturday, and winched the hut upright. Its corner posts were then strengthened with totara butts, and the structure cross-braced inside with heavy wire, twisted up tight. The hut should now be “good for another 20 years,'* according to the party.
