Transport Of Men And Equipment
Transport arrangement! for New Zealand men and equipment bound for the Antarctic this year were completed at a conference at the United States Navy Antarctic headquarters at Harewood yesterday afternoon. Taking part were representatives of the Antarctic Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the United States Antarctic Research Programme, and United States Navy logistics experts. Yesterday’s conference (a preliminary discussion was held last week* decided the method and order of transport by both air and sea of New Zealand’s Antarctic team and equipment. Flights will be made between October 1 and November 21 and ships will sail between November. 1 and December 27.
About 15,0001 b of cargo and 54 men will be flown. The cargo includes priority field supplies and base equipment. The men will include the relief winter party, two geological field parties, two biologists for HaUett station and Cape Adare, and parties from Canterbury and Victoria Universities and the Federation of Mountain Club*
Ships will take about 30.0001 b of cargo and 17 men. The cargo will include base construction equipment, material for the university and mountain club parties, a tractor, and spares for the snocat The 17 men will include the construction team for Scott Base extensions and maintenance men.
New Zealanders who have wintered in the Antarctic are expected to return to the Dominion from about October 5 to October 22 or 23.
