SHANKS AT MT. EDEN

“He Won’t Get

Away”

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Sept. 18.

John Anthony Gordon Shanks arrived back at Mount Eden Prison under strong police guard this afternoon. Asked whether any special preparations were made for him, the prison superintendent (Mr H. V. Haywood) said tonight: "He won’t get away from here."

Shanks, aged 33. who escaped twice in a few days on his way back from giving Crown evidence in Palmerston North, first from the express and then from Taihape lock-up, was brought from Taihape today in a police car.

The police took no chances. His escort was two constables, a police dog and a driver. He was handcuffed for the trip. Shanks was recaptured near Waiouru at 1.30 this morning' after fleeing the Taihape lock-up 24 hours before.
