PLANES FOR R.N.Z.A.F. Hercules Case Put
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Sept. 18.
It would be “some time” before the Air Force made a firm recommendation to the Government on the type of planes with which it should re-equip, an R.N.Z.A.F. spokesman said tonight. But, he said, it was no secret that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice-Marshal I. G. Morrison, preferred the Hercules Cl3O.
Yesterday, representatives of the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation put the Hercules’ case to the Cabinet, chiefs of staff and representatives of Government departments.
Today they gave the company’s proposals at a press conference. The leader of the Lockheed team, Mr W. D. Perrault. said the Hercules could combine the roles of maritime aircraft, transport and supply planes and troop transporters. Standard models cost about £900,000. Others fitted for maritime search and rescue, submarine detection and combat were costlier.
A fleet of 12 planes—some with special equipment—might coat from £l2 million to £l5 million, he said.
