Moved In By Cabinet
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Sept 18. New Zealand’s first State house was officially occupied 25 years ago today. Half the Cabinet was there to help the first State tenants move in. The Prime Minister (Mr Savage), coatless and hatless,, hoisted, a divan chair on to his right shoulder that Saturday afternoon in 1937. Then, as it was described by the newspapers: “He marched up the front steps, swung round without hitting anything,
deposited the chair in the front room, and declared the house open for occupation.” Those first State tenants still occupy that first State house in Fife lane, Miramar. But, like 17,382 other State tenants, they bought their home When they had the opportunity to do so after the first Labour Government went out of office. Since that day a quarter of a century ago about 60,010 State houses have been built. But there are still more than 10,000 on the waiting list
