N.Z.-French Talks?
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, Sept. 18 The possibility of a Ministerial talk between New Zealand and France on Common Market problems Is being discussed guardedly in New Zealand circles. Such a meeting would be the logical sequel to the discussions in London and in view of the dominating role of France in the E.E.C. and her
expanding dairy production. During the marathon session in Brussels at the beginning of August before the announcement of special terms to be offered by the Six to New Zealand, it was the French who stood out against the remaining five of the E.E.C. Commission. Although this was not referred to in any way by members of the New Zealand delegation now in London, it is a good guess that there is a feeling a Ministerial meeting might go a long way to improve the mutual understanding of the two countries’ problems on the future of butter marketing. The idea of a French-New Zealand meeting may have arisen from the British-New Zealand talks on the special arrangements, which as far as can be made out, have been mainly concerned with butter These talks are not yet completed and are expected to continue this week. It is believed likely that some announcement of a meeting in Paris may be made later today.
