Fines For Assault

Two youths were fined £lO each in the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch this week for assaulting a 15-year-old boy, whose injuries included a cut that required five stitches. Both offenders had previous convictions. Without knowing all the circumstances that may have influenced the Magistrate we cannot be sure that these bullies were treated with undue

leniency, though a prison sentence would have seemed more appropriate. But the public are entitled to expect the courts to show firmly their disapproval of such behaviour, particularly since the only excuse for this particular attack was that the police had inquired into a previous assault on the boy. Intimidation designed to impede the course of justice cannot be tolerated.
