APPEAL BY RED CROSS

Aid To Earthquake Victims The North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society has started a public appeal to raise money to help victims of the Persian earthquake. “We received a telegram from headquarters in Wellington asking us to launch a public appeal, a thing we don’t do often, only when there is a major disaster.” said Mrs R. I. Brake, president of the North Canterbury centre. The national body began an appeal in Wellington with a grant of £5OO from its disaster relief fund. The executive committee of the North Canterbury centre has made a grant of £250 to the fund. Yesterday afternoon £lB6 had Been received by the centre. £7O from subcentres and £ll6 from the public. Junior Red Cross members are invited to contribute, sending their donations to their junior organiser. Red Cross sub-centres were asked to send in donations to the North Canterbury centre in Cashel street urgently.
