TASMAN FLIGHT

Record Set By Electra (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. Sept. 6. A flight record for Tasman Airways for the Sydney to Auckland run was established by an Electra this afternoon. The plane covered the 1340 miles from tower to tower in 2 hours 52 minutes at an average speed of approximately 460 miles an hour. The old record, which was established on June 30, 1961, was 2 hours 58 minutes. The scheduled time for the crossing is 3 hours 55 minutes. The plane left Sydney at 3.13 p.m„ New Zealand time and arrived in Auckland at 65 p.m. There was an average tail wind of 115 knots and at one part of the flight the plane climbed to 27.000 feet to escape turbulence. There were 68 passengers on board the Electra, which was commanded by Captain C. J. Le Coutur.
