Duke Has Only One Regret
[From the London correspondent of "The press’’]
LONDON The Duke of Norfolk, in the quiet of the famous Long Room at Lord’s this afternoon, confessed to me that his excitement and anticipatory pleasure at the thought of visiting New Zealand shortly as manager of the M.C.C. cricket side was tinged with only one regret. “I really am very sorry that my old friend and cricketing companion, Lord Cobham, will not still be there when I arrive in February.’’ he said. "We were together in w Jamaica when I took a side there in
1957 and we had a wonderfully enjoyable time.” Still, there were many pleasing aspects about the visit, he said. He had not previously visited New Zealand which made’ the trip all the more exciting. Then, too, there were many people, good friends all, with whom he was looking forward to renewing acquaintance. "It will be grand to see my old friend Jack Phillipps again,” he said. "Then there are Walter Hadlee. Wallace. Reid ... all of them, and I have met so many New Zealand
cricketers here.” His Grace makes no secret of the fact that horseracing is very dear to his heart, but today he could not say with any certainty whether the itinerary in New Zealand was such that he could attend a race meeting or two during this section of the tour. “If it is possible, then I should very much like a visit to a race meeting,” he said. The Duke of Norfolk is not a fisherman, but he was pijpared to concede that in New Zealand he might be tempted to become one.
