Cadiz Brilliant

The former Riccarton galloper Cadiz (above) added to his stature in American racing with a brilliant second recently in a division of the Bing Crosby Handicap, run over six furlongs al Del Mar, California. Crazy Kid won the race in the American record time of Imin 7 4-ssec—l-ssec faster than Dumpty Humpty’s record set five years ago at the Golden Gate track, San Francisco. Cadiz’s second was one of the most remarkable features of the race. Carrying topweight of 8-10, he was five lengths from the lead after two furlongs, but finished with “a terrific burst" along the rails to get within a length and three-quarters of the winner at the finish. Crazy Kid, carrying 8-6. ran the first two furlongs in 22 l-ssec, the second two in 22sec and the last two in 23 2-ssec. For the first half-mile he took 44 l-ssec —4-ssec less than. Beau Madison’s world figure, and for five furlongs 56sec, which reduced Bettan-

bull’s time, set three years ago, by 2-ssec. The fastest half-mile in New Zealand ahd Australia is Gloaming's 45sec. at Trentham in 1921 when he carried 9-1. Aurie’s Star, at Flemington. and Founliainhead. a: Trentham. share the six furlongs record of Imin 84sec. A Los Angeles sports writer described Crazy Kid’s time as comparable with the first four-minute mile, the first seven-foot high jump and the first 16-foot pole vault. The stake for the race was 13,625 dollars, of which Cadiz’s share was 2500 dollars. Plans for the gelding now are for him to go to Arlington Park, Chicago, with his stablemate. Braganza. for the 100.000 dollars Washington Park Handicap, run over a mile, on September 3. Cadiz is expected to clash again with the Hollywood Gold Cup winner, Prove It. in this event. Cadiz and Braganza are expected to race then in the 100.000 dollars United Nations Handicap, run over a mile and three-sixteenths at Atlan. tic City on September 15.
