Men’s Basketball CANTERBURY LOSES
Relegated To Section B (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 26 The Canterbury men's basketball team lost its second of three qualifying games when it was beaten 46-32 by Auckland A in the New Zealand indoor basketball championships at Lower Hutt tonight. Canterbury will now spend the remainder of the tournament in Division B. If it had beaten Auckland by 18 points, then it would have been included in Division A. Canterbury could not penetrate the Auckland zone defence, and scored the majority of its points from set shots. Auckland scored freely from fast breaks and set plays. The New Zealand hop, step, and jump champion, D. Norris, was in fine form for Auckland. He broke quickly when the occasion warranted and scored with some fine jump shots. M. Wilson. C. Hilt. A. McTavish. and J. Bull completed a strong Auckland side, and Canterbury was behind for most of the game. Canterbury missed too many of its early shots, but it levelled toe scores at 21-all early in the second half. Auckland gained control again. Canterbury played well, nevertheless, and if it had beaten the number one seed it would have been a major upset. Other results were:— Auckland 49. Wanganui 38: Hamilton 49, Otago 40; Hutt Valley 40. Auckland B 36; Dunedin Mercantile 52. Wairarapa 41; Wanganui 71, Wellington B 20; New Zealand 68. Southland 22; Otaro 43. Auckland B 40; Nelson 47. Palmerston North 40; Wellington 39. Rotorua 35; Auckland 46, Canterbury 32; Hamilton 27. Hutt Valley 26.
