STUDENTS FROM 37 COUNTRIES IN N.Z.

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 28. Students from 37 countries were studying in New Zealand last year, the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) said today. Of the 590 students, 180 came from Western Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand island territories: 295 from other countries and territories in the Commonwealth and the rest mainly from Colombo Plan countries outside the Commonwealth. Mr Tennent said students had come from Asia. Africa, North and South America, and Europe. Engineering and agriculture were the most popular subjects of study accounting for more than a third of the students. “Most of these students have come to New Zealand under the sponsorship of aid programmes such as the Colombo Plan or under scholar-

ship schemes operated by the authorities of the country or territory concerned,” Mr Tennent said. “New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to give advanced training to students from other countries because this is one of the most effective ways in which we, as a small nation, can help developing countries. “It also gives a splendid opportunity for the development of understanding and friendship between New Zealand and the countries concerned. “New Zealand has had a difficult time in providing sufficient university accommodation for its own students but the university authorities have co-operated magnificently in making places available to students from other countries,” said Mr Tennent.
