CLUBS GET CHARTERS

North Otago Applications (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Aug. 28. The Licensing Control Commission in a decision released today announced that it has granted a charter to the Oamaru Men’s Club and Mutual School of Arts if and when plans for improvements and extensions to the club’s premises have been carried out to the satisfaction of the commission. The commission said it did not agree that the capacity of the designed premises was adequate for a membership of 1000. The commission said it did not believe the purposes of the Oamaru Licensing Trust would be impeded, although it would be very difficult to persuade the commission that another chartered club would be necessary in Oamaru. A club charter will also be granted to the Benmore subbranch of the North Otago RS.A. for the sub-branch’s clubroom at Otematata. The decision said the appli. cation was opposed by the Otematata Hotel on the grounds that the charter would be for a short time only and because it would affect the economy of the hotel. The commission said there was a reasonable prospect of Otematata village remaining in existence for some time after 1965 and the membership of the club was comparatively small. A charter would be granted when certain alterations were made to the clubrooms to the satisfaction of the police and health authorities for the sale of liquor for consumption on the premises only.
