“PIRATE” RADIO

Ship To Have Transmitters (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, August 28. Britain's first “pirate” radio ship, the fishing vessel, Ellen, is expected to sail from a secret Scottish hideout within 48 hours for a permanent station in the Thames estuary off the Nore, says the “Daily Telegraph.” The first transmissions are planned within two days of her arrival. The Ellen will be equipped with three onekilowatt transmitters which give radial coverage of at least 80 miles. The distance from the Nore to central London is under 50 miles. Transmitters at the floating studio will put out programmes of music, advertising and news. Sponsors say that advertising contracts for “substantial sums" have been negotiated with British companies. Tea Factory.— Papua New Guinea s first tea factory was officially opened today by the Administrator (Sir Donald Cleland).—Port Moresby, August 28.
