ICE NEAR INTAKE

Pilot Feathers Propeller (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 28. Severe icing around the intake of one engine caused a Tasman Empire Airways pilot to fly half-way from Fiji on three engines today. The airliner, an Electra, carrying 55 passengers, arrived at Whenuapai 20 minutes late at 5.40 p.m., and made a normal approach and landing. Piloted by Captain I. Russell, the airliner was flying at 20,000 feet. Approaching half-way, the aircraft ran into quite severe icing conditions. Captain Russell noticed icing up around the intake of No. 1 engine, and rather than risk chunks of ice being sucked into the engine, he feathered the propeller and descended to 11,500 feet.
