LONDON, Aug. 26. Cockney children of Montclare street (above), in London’s crowded East End. were this week in sight of victory in their battle against the capital’s traffic. To keep the street for themselves the children, ranging in age from five-year-olds to teenagers, decided to set up a road-block to keep the cars out. Each morning, as the rush hour began, they brought record-players out into their street and started twisting. So far, they have turned back lorries, mini-cars and even some touring coaches And they have been promised official help, which may be needed when the school holidays are over and they cannot man their twisting barricade any more. Montclare street had been set aside as a “play street”
where only cars belonging to residents, are allowed access. But with traffic congestion as it is in the East End, enterprising drivers had found Montclare street an easy short-cut. Until the children took to the twist, that was.
