Women’s Hockey Canterbury Loses One, Wins One

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, August 27. By beating Canterbury and Manlototo on the second day of the national

women's hoekey tournament at Dunedin. Otago now leads section B. Canterbury is equal second.

Canterbury was beaten. 4-0. by the fast-moving Otago team, whose long through passes and switches of play exposed weaknesses in Canterbury’s defence. N. Lermte’s faulty positional play and poor trapping Imposed a great burden on her defence. J. Murray cane through a trying game with great credit. Her tackling was decisive, her passing accurate, and her covering of great value. The Canterbury half line was again outstanding, because of its ability to trap and pass accurately and because of its cover defence.

A. Colville played soundly, and S. Comer’s passing and stick-work were of their usual high standard. A. Fleete was a tower of strength on attack and defence.

ft was unfortunate the forwards were unable to take advantage of this. They were slow to retreat and link with their defence, they failed to get unmarked, and faulty trapping and passing led to the breakdown of many attacks. Otago was quick to capitalise on this. F. Kelly again bore the main burden of the Canterbury attack. She hunted the ball, backtackled. trapped well, and her passing was constructive. D. Eddy made some forceful runs on the right wing. But the attack suffered from the failure of the forwards to return play

to the right. A. Walker dribbled wen. but could have switched play more often. In the game with Hawke's Bay. Canterbury took advantage of weak opposition to indulge in a limited amount of shortpassing tn the forwards. As a result of this more constructive approach. Canterbury scored four goals. The goals were scored by H. Walker (3) and F. Kelly (i>. Morning results were:— Major A Section.—Auckland A 3. Malvern 0: Ashburton 3. Taranaki 0; Wellington 3. Eastern Southland 0.
