Northern Star Arrives
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. There was nothing but praise tram many of the 1200 passengers for Shaw Savill's new liner Northern Star when she arrived ait Wellington today. The vessel anchored in the harbour soon after 6 aim.. completing her maiden voyage in a blaze of lights from bow to stern. Among those lining the ba,rriers waving to relatives was the Prime Minister <Mr Holyoake).
He was seen by a harbour board official who asked what he was doing on the “wrong side.” Mr Holyoake replied he was there to see his son arrive and “just wanted to be one of the crowd.” Whether he wanted it or not, stops were taken to see that he joined the official party boarding the ship from the wharf. The Northern Star was a week late in arriving because of turbine trouble and
repairs carried out in Sydney. Har two engines broke down near Las Palmas. A company apokesman said there was still a certain amount of controversy about the exact cause of the trouble and that “it is a very technical point" “We have been assured the machinery is now 'in sound working order and that there will be no further breakdowns." he said. The liner will leave Wellington at 9 pan. tomorrow for Auckland where only one instead of two days will be spent. Southampton will be reached on October I—six days behind schedule.
