N.Z. HEATERS INFERIOR
Test Made For S.LM.U.
An English car heater tested with two New Zea-land-made car heaters proved superior, the executive committee of the South Island Motor Union was told. The heaters were tested for the S.I.M.U. by the Industrial Development Department of the University of Canterbury. The director of the department (Mr T. R. Pollard) reported that water and air flow rates were selected to give what could be expected to be average operating conditions when installed, but these conditions would vary with various cars.
Under test conditions it appeared that the maximum output which could be obtained was 1.31 kilowatts for the English heater, .66 kilowatts for one New Zealand heater and .54 kilowatts for the other. The chairman (Mr E. C. Champion) said the term kilowatts was used for comparison with the amount of heat produced by an electric heater. A one-bar heater produced one kilowatt, a two-bar two kilowatts, and so on.
*A motion that the report be discussed in committee was lost on a show of hands. Mr T. E. V. Turpin (Otago) said he felt the matter should be brought to the notice of the Consumer Council.
The meeting decided copies of the report should be made available to the newspapers, the Consumer Council, and referred to the joint standing committee of the motor unions to take the matter up with the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall). It was decided that the union would bear the cosit of the tests.
