HEATING OF ROAD
Installation For Antarctic
Heating tapes in metal troughs are to be laid along the road serving Scott Base, in the Antarctic, to prevent solid ice forming. The tapes, designed to operate at temperatures from 40 to more than 100 degrees, will keep the road surface above freezing point and prevent the formation of ice which normally occurs after a slight thaw. At certain times of the year about 18m of ice freezes over the road when rising temperatures melt the snow. The water becomes frozen before it can drain away. The tapes will be flatelement hea ting tapes encased in glass fibre reinforcing resin. They will be made in 12ft lengths, two inches wide and one inch deep, and will be laid under one side of the road in a metal trough. The tapes will comprise three heating strips, each 170 ft long.
