SQUASH RACKETS C. R. Waugh Wins For Third Time

(From Our Own Reporter)

PALMERSTON N„ Aug. 27. In a final, disappointing as a spectacle and Isatin* only 24 minutes, C. R. Waugh, on' his home courts, won hi* third successive New Zealand squash rackets title at Palmerston North today. Waugh made no race of the final, in, which he beat I. T. Easton, of Hamilton, seeded second, in straight games, allow*ing his opponent only six points in the match. It was the sixth meeting of the season of Waugh and Easton in a championship final; Easton had won one. bu>t did not look likely tn repeat that success.

There can be no doubt as to Waugh's position in New Zealand squash He was not extended and did not seem likely to lose a game in any match at this tournament. Easton, after the hardest game of hi* career against G. L. Bird the day before, and then another hard game with K. R. Green in the Cousins Shield, was obviously jaded and was unable to match Waugh's court mobility. Waugh scored with drives, some delightful boasts which invariably found Easton wrongfooted. delicate drop shots and drop volleys, and some fine lobs and good length. He also scored with a more than usual number of shots placed so close to the walls that Easton.. although in position, eould not get the ball up. In the three games, Waugh made only eight errors, and only one or two could be deemed unnecessary. Such was his confidence, that he often played drop shots while on the run and inevitbaly a few of these went down. But Waugh scored 30 winners: his comparatively new all-round game has probably

seldom been better, and he was always tn command. It soon became obvious just how the demand* of the day before had left Bsaton. much the older man. without the necessary fitness to extend the champion. Few rallies developed for a* long a* would normally be expected when these two. who knew each other* Bmes so well, are matched, ston could not get to the ball quickly enough, and he made many mistake* through being forced to play his shot at full stretch. Hl* usual pattern of tight, good-length squash was mainly missing. and only towards the end. after Waugh had raced to a 7-0 lead in the last game, could he manage to keep Waugh in back-court with some fine lobs. Australian Winner The Australian junior champion. Miss P. McClenaugtian. seeded No. 1. lost the first game in the women’s championship final to Mr* A. Tietjens (Auckland), but once she settled down and began to place her firm drives to more purpose she always looked the winner. Mrs Tietjens gradually lost touch a* her opponent's pace increased, and mistakes in the fourth game lost her a good chance of taking the match the full distance. The other Australian visitor, R. Ratinac. compensated for his defeat in the first round of the championship and the Junior final by beating the veteran A. Johns easily in the A grade plate final. The two Christchurch players who survived to the Anal dav were both beaten. G. C. P Bcadel lost the final of the B grade championship, and E. R. Morris, holder of the C ’grade championship, lost to J. St. J. Parson in the semi-finals. Beadel has had a very successful tournament and made a great effort to take J. N. Isaacs, a very promising Timaru youngster, to the fifth game. Parson surprised wish his hard-hitting displays. His pace upset Morris, who had previously been in good touch, and he went on to a good win in the final, to give the South Island one championship victory and an interest in another. Results of finals were:— New Zealand Championship.— C. R. Waugh (Palmerston North) beat I. T. Easton (Hamilton), 9-1, 9-3, 9-2. B Grade Championship.—J N. Isaacs (Timaru) beat G. C. P.
