N.Z. PLASTICS INDUSTRY
Expansion Noted In Survey A survey has been conducted by the Government Statistician of the major factories manufacturing plastic products, says the Department of Statistics in the a-bs'ract for July. This excluded firms engaged in making plastic apparel and handbags, the conversion of plastic film into bags and wrappings, and the pressing of gramophone records. A total of 91 factories was surveyed. The value of output of plastics by these establishments during 1960-61 was £9 2m compared with £7 4m in the previous year The plastics industry is located mainlv in the Auckland, Lower Hutt, and Christchurch districts. Of the total output. £3.9m was produced in Auckland. £3m in Christchurch. and £l.2m in Lower Hutt. In many of the factories Included in the survey, products other than plastics were produced amounting in total to £B.2m. The expansion of Plastics manufacture in New Zealand is illustrated by the 21 per cent, increase in the value in 1960-61 of the output of those factories engaged solely in this class of work, accompanied by an increase in the numbers of persons engaged from 1407 to 1630.
