HOCKEY Taylor Trophy To West Old Boys

In the sixteenth and final round of the Canterbury Hockey Association's senior competition. West Old Boys won the Taylor Trophv by beating Sydenham. This award is made to the team which gains the premier position in the minor sub-division of the championship.

Major honours had already been attained by Woolston which lost to High School Old Boys in a match which was keenly contested, although lacking to some extent the normal competition atmosphere. Three of the games were played at the Polo Grounds, which were in reasonably good order, although inclined to be rather bumpy Selwyn won a further competition point, but is still in last place on the ladder and may be required to play a relegation match. Results were: —

High School Old Boys 3, Woolston 1. University 1, Harewood I. West Old Boys 2, Sydenham 1. Selwyn 3. Technical Old Boys 2.

Final competition points are: Senior championehiip, Woolston 13J, High School Old Boys 12, Harewood 10%, University 8. Taylor Trophy, West Old Boys 8. Sydenham 5. Technical Old Boys 4. Selwyn 3. WEST OLD BOYS V. SYDENHAM Not until the late stages of the game did West Old Boys move with the liveliness which has characterised their play in the second half of the season but their attacks always looked more dangerous than those of Sydenham, and the final score was a fair reflection of the merits of the two teams. Playing with what appeared to be a modification of the Swiss bolt system, the West defence held the opposing forwards in check, and spirited efforts in the vanguard by R. Thomson, P Clark and W. Thomson subjected Sydenham to severe pressure in the second ha Goals for West Old Boys were scored by A. Scott and W. Thomson, and A. Ghana scored for Sydenham. Umpires:—Messrs W. Duncan and R. Cahill. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS V. WOOLSTON Considerably weakened by the absence of B. Judge. Woolston could make little headway in a match which tended to proceed by fits and starts. Old Boys conducted the bulk of the attacking, and their winning margin fairly reflected their superiority Both teams sought to concentrate their attacks through the right flank, and the game was characterised by much hard, crossfield hitting. Both teams gained a penalty push, but on each occasion the respective

goal-keepers were able to prevent scores.

For High School Old Boys, goals were obtained by J. Kiddey (2) and I. D. Armstrong. B. Monk scored for Woolston. Umpires:—Messrs W. Perry and P. Beere. UNIVERSITY v. HAREWOOD Although having the better of the play, University’s lack of finish in its forward line prevented it from capitalising on its midfield superiority, and it had to be content with a draw. Its centre-half. K. Thomson, once more emphasised his value to his team, and the introduction of R. O’Connor to the centre-forward position gave the vanguard some degree of stability. G. Baldwin played an outstanding game in Harewood’s defence, and without his efforts University would probably have gained the verdict. Its goal was scored by G. Rothwell, and L. Smith scored for Harewood. Umpires:—Messrs M. Good and D. Holland SELWYN v. TECHNICAL OLD BOYS In a bright, fast-moving, even match the more closely controlled methods of Selwyn offered a contrast to the open game favoured by Technical. By midway through the second spell Selwyn had gained a justifiable lead of one goal, but in the last quarter Technical applied considerable pressure, and only valiant cover defence prevented it from saving the game. During this period Selwyn had great difficulty in mounting counter attacks, but it did make one break which caught the Technical defence right out of position and left the goal at its mercy, only for the final shot to fly over the top of the cross-bar.

A factor of considerable importance In Selwyn holding Technical at bay was the backtackling of the Selwyn inside forwards. Although development has been Slow. Selwyn has shown definite improvement in the second half of the season, and the result of this match should give it increased confidence.

Umpires:—Messrs E. Jackson and E. Ambler.
