LAST SECONDS PENALTY
Trophy And £5OO To Northern
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. Aug. 26.
Northern, of Dunedin, became the first holder of the Rothman’s Trophy, and winner of £5OO. in the national club soccer tournament on Saturday. Although it lost the second match at Dunedin. 1-2, to Eastern Suburbs (Auckland), Northern won the home-and-away series by three goals to two, having won the first leg. 2-0 The game was not decided until the final seconds when the Northern captain, J. Ferguson, scored a penalty after Eastern had netted twice late in the second half to make up its two-goal deficit. All three of Northern's goals were scored from penalties, the Dunedin team netting twice from the spot in the first match at Auckland.
Five For Wanganui
(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANU. Aug. 26. Wanganui defeated Taranaki. 3-1. and showed the better finish. in a representative soccer match at Wanganui on Saturday.
