For Tobacco Growers

Thirty-two tobacco growers or their sons ranging in age from 18 to 40 years from Motueka and district are now in residence at Lincoln College attending the first course of its kind. Two field officers from one of the tobacco companies are also present.

The course, which began last Monday and will continue until next Friday, is being sponsored by the Tobacco Companies Trust Board, which is paying all expenses. The board, which was initiated by the companies to safeguard growers against crop loss through disease or weather, has also founded a scholarship for one pupil a year from the Motueka District High School to attend the diploma in horticulture course at Lincoln. Lecturers for the course are drawn from the Departments of Scientific and Industrial Research, Agriculture and Labour, the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute, and one of the tobacco companies as well as the college.
