More Pay Under

New Award

Minimum weekly rates of pay for general warehousemen (other than those working with softgoods) are increased in a new award issued by the Arbitration Court. The new rates are retrospective to July 26 and other provisons are effective from August 21. The award applies to general warehousemen earning less than £930, excluding overtime and bonuses, compared with £B7O in the previous award. Minimum rates for males aged 21 are increased by 12s to £ll 15s 6d; those for males a’ed 22 and over are increased oy 13s 4d to £l3 6s 8d: and those for males aged 27 or with 11 years’ service are increased by 13s 6d to £l3 14s. Wages for females aged 21 are raised by 9s 2d to £8 18s. For country travellers the minimum rate is raised by 14s to £l5 Is; for other than country travellers it is raised by 13s 6d to £l4 Is 6d for the first two years, and by 14s to £l4 13s thereafter.

The hourly rate for casual workers is raised by 4d to 7s 2d. A new clause covers part-time workers, entitling them to the appropriate proportionate scale plus 10 per cent.

An unqualified preference clause is also included in the new award, requiring workers to be members of the union.
