CONTROL OF NASSELLA
Labour Position “Good”
Eight gangs, totalling 65 men, were working on tussock control in North Canterbury, the secretarymanager of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board (Mr F. J. Foley) said at a meeting of the board yesterday. As well, 20 men were coming from Christchurch each day under the scheme to give work to the unemployed. High school boys during the holidays should be enough to make eight gangs, making a total grubbing strength of 130 men and boys, Mr Foley said. Permanent staff of the board should be absorbed completely as foremen. This good labour position might suffer next month with the start of seasonal work, Mr Foley said. Inspection Party Members of the Banks Peninsula Noxious Weeds Committee were astounded by what they saw on a recent visit to nessella tussock country in North Canterbury. Mr Foley said.
“The party went away fully impressed with the necessity of dealing with any small infestation immediately, otherwise it might be faced with a problem similar to ours.”
