SUPERVISION OF MANUFACTURERS
Drainage Board’s Position “It is a poor look-out for New Zealand manufacturers if they cannot do the job they are supposed to do without supervision,” said Mr E. V. Smith when the Christchurch Drainage Board was considering the employment of its observer at a pipemanufacturing company. “As a manufacturer. I agree.” commented Mr J. K. Dobson. Mr G. A. G. Connal questioned the need for an observer at the factory. It had been necessary some years ago, wihen there were many complaints about the quality of pipes; but tihe quality had improved.
"We must still ensure that there is good quality, for the pipes have to go underground and to last many years,” said Mr R. C. Neville. Mr H. F. Page, tfhe chief engineer (operations), explained that the observer spent some of his time at another factory to supervise the manufacture of manhole covers.
The board agreed that the construction committee should report on the observer’s work.
