TO LELTLRE IN CANADA
Invitation To N.Z. Author
Mr Antony Alpers, a we’lkr.own New Zealand author and journalist, left on Tuesday for Canada where he will spend a year at the invitelion of the University of British Columbia. His visit is being made under a grant from the Canada Council.
For the rest of this year Mr Alpers will be a visiting lecturer in ths English department of the University of British Columbia dealing principally with New Zealend literature.
After that he will visit other Canadian universities and spend a month in Ottawa. The Canada Council was created by act of Parliament in 1957 to encourage the arts, humanities. and social sciences. The Canadian Parliament set up two funds of 50.000,000 dollars each —one to endow annual lectureships and other schemes and t'he other to subsidise university building schemes in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Mr Alpers is the author of “Katherine Mansfield. a Biography.” and “A Book of Dolphins,” and his latest work, a new treatment of Maori legends, will be published next year by John Mmrray (London). Houghton Mifflin (Boston), and Paul’s Book Arcade (Hamilton).
Mr Alpers earlier this year returned temporarily to “The Press,” where he began his journalistic carreer 25 years ago.
